眉目,就如羅蘭巴特所說的「沒有符碼的訊息」(a message without a code)。

KLACK Photography & Culture
3rd Semi-Annual issue/ 2011 is launched!

Hints - Narrativity in Photography

The theme of this issue of KLACK is “Hints”, which is about the narrative function in photography. For a story, besides the basic elements, there are always some “hints” which gradually reveal the story and create continuity in it. “Hints”, is also a property of photo and image. Image is a flat surface which fills up with symbols. In between the symbols, it relies on readers to link up and interpret different symbols according to their own experiences and thoughts. So, “Hints” here, is like “a message without a code” mentioned by Roland Barthes.

In a photo, we can get evidences which have once been existed in reality. However, can these evidences represent the whole of a story? This ambiguity in photography extends into different forms of narration. Thus, we decided to research and collect on images that worth discussion, in result of having Ducky Tse’s photo essay of the border regions between Northern Thailand and the rural areas in Burma, showing the life of the group of Chinese that are forgotten in Chinese History; Ellis Yip in this issue interviewed the Animated News of Hong Kong Appledaily, and explores its drastic influence on the narration of traditional journalism, changing our way of reading press images and news reporting; Lee Wing-ki continues to interview for us three renowned documentary photographers in Hong Kong and overseas, trying to have a glance on the different method and focus of their photo narratives; besides, we have seek collaboration with a local private detective office, whom also utilises images as their main tool, showcasing the way of how they interpret their photo report on an extramarital affair; also, Damian Cheng in this issue analyzes about how family photos as a photo medium, bring out different layers of narrativity that are away from the surface of the photo, from there we learn about the method and possibility of narration of photography.

KLACK has also seek the collaboration with the emerging young film director and screenplay writer Heiward Mak Hei-yan to create a text story, with the input of young photographer Andrea Pun, to create a short photo story book, along with the main book of KLACK #003.
